"El Paraje Natural Desierto de Tabernas está situada al norte de la ciudad de Almería, entre las sierras de los Filabres y de Alhamilla, que la aislan de las corrientes húmedas del cercano mar Mediterráneo. Cárcavas, taludes, torrenteras y ramblas. Desierto y desolación. Paisaje transportado desde los ricos fondos marinos del Mediterráneo hasta estas calcinadas y áridas llanuras almerienses, donde una paradójica sensación de incertidumbre, desasosiego y asombro se apodera de gran parte de sus visitantes.
Está considerado como la única zona desértica propiamente dicha de todo el continente europeo. El paraje ofrece una ingente y rica variedad de recursos ambientales de interés, especialmente geológicos. Bajo un clima mediterráneo subárido, con precipitaciones que no alcazan los 250 mm anuales y temperaturas medias superiores a los 17° C, se han formado ramblas de tipo mediterráneo, las conocidas "bad lands" que dan forma a estepas de gramíneas.
En cuanto a la flora, presenta un elevado número de endemismos exclusivos del área, iberonorteafricanismos y especies raras a nivel mundial, que sólo aparecen en él y en otros puntos de idéntica caracterización. La singularidad de la flora del desierto almeriense la define la presencia de la crucífera Euzomodendron bourgaeanum (endemismo de Tabernas) y otras como Limoniun insignis o la parásita Cynomo rium coccineum. Taray y adelfa aparecen en las ramblas.
Por la riqueza de su avifauna este paraje se declaró Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves. Las aves se pueden observar, sobre todo, en los cursos de las ramblas o en las paredes donde encuentran lugares para refugiarse y nidificar. Es el caso del vencejo real, el avión roquero, el roquero solitario o la grajilla. Destaca también la presencia del camachuelo trompetero y de otras de aves esteparias, como alcaraván, ganga y cogujada. Además en este singular paraje habitan reptiles como la lagartija colirroja, culebra de escalera o el lagarto ocelado; y mamíferos como el zorro, conejo, lirón careto y las dos especies de erizos españoles, el moruno y el común.
Bajo el paisaje de cárcavas se esconde un museo natural a escala real, vivo y único en el contexto europeo por su interés para el estudio de los procesos erosivos y geológicos. Es posible observar, por ejemplo, todo un muestrario natural de formas: microcráteres provocados por el impacto de gotas de lluvia, chimeneas de hadas, surcos o regueros, gullies, sismitas (capas deformadas en pliegues como consecuencia de actividad sísmica en el momento de la deposición), arrecifes fósiles,... o el emblemático y majestuoso Cerro Alfaro.
Uno de sus recursos económicos más explotados es, llamativamente, el haber servido de escenario para el rodaje de películas."

"The Tabernas Desert Natural Area is located north of the city of Almería, between the Filabres and Alhamilla mountain ranges, which isolate it from the humid currents of the nearby Mediterranean Sea. Gullies, slopes, torrents and ravines. Desert and desolation Landscape transported from the rich seabed of the Mediterranean to these scorched and arid plains of Almería, where a paradoxical feeling of uncertainty, restlessness and amazement takes over a large part of its visitors.
It is considered the only actual desert area on the entire European continent. The area offers a huge and rich variety of environmental resources of interest, especially geological. Under a sub-arid Mediterranean climate, with rainfall that does not reach 250 mm per year and average temperatures above 17° C, Mediterranean-type boulevards have formed, the well-known "bad lands" that give rise to grass steppes.
As for the flora, it presents a high number of endemisms exclusive to the area, Ibero-North Africanisms and globally rare species, which only appear in it and in other points of identical characterization. The uniqueness of the flora of the Almeria desert is defined by the presence of the cruciferous Euzomodendron bourgaeanum (endemic to Tabernas) and others such as Limoniun insignis or the parasite Cynomo rium coccineum. Taray and oleander appear on the ramblas.
Due to the richness of its birdlife, this area was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds. The birds can be observed, above all, in the courses of the boulevards or on the walls where they find places to take refuge and nest. This is the case of the royal swift, the rock martin, the solitary rock thrush or the jackdaw. Also noteworthy is the presence of the trumpeter bullfinch and other steppe birds, such as the curlew, sandgrouse and lark. Additionally, reptiles such as the red-tailed lizard, ladder snake or the ocellated lizard live in this unique place; and mammals such as the fox, rabbit, dormouse and the two species of Spanish hedgehogs, the Moorish and the common.
Under the landscape of gullies hides a full-scale natural museum, alive and unique in the European context due to its interest in the study of erosive and geological processes. It is possible to observe, for example, a whole natural display of shapes: microcraters caused by the impact of raindrops, fairy chimneys, grooves or rills, gullies, seismites (layers deformed into folds as a result of seismic activity at the time of deposition), fossil reefs,... or the emblematic and majestic Cerro Alfaro.
One of its most exploited economic resources is, strikingly, having served as a setting for the filming of films."
