American Legion Post 498 was chartered on May 12, 1946. The namesake, Indalecio Lopez, served in the US Coast Guard in World War I. He received a commendation for participating in the rescue of eight crew from the schooner Cape Horn, which capsized off of South Padre Island in 1919, in sea conditions that were described as the worst-seen in the area.
