On 30 April 1894, the British Steamship Breconshire (formerly the Numidian), bound from New York to Tampa, stranded on the offshore limestone reef leaving its boiler visible above the waves. The 24-man crew was sheltered by the U.S. Life Saving Service at their refuge station located on the dunes east of Bethel Creek and one mile north of this site.
