This public fountain represents the god of Mercury, in Roman religion, Mercury was the god of mischief, eloquence and wit. He also acted as the messenger of other gods. He had wings on his gold hat and the sandals of his feet to help him speed from one destination to the next.

The city of Pompeii had 40 public fountains spread throughout the city, this is one of them, in Vicolo di Eumachia, 68, 80045 Pompei NA, Italia

The fountains consisted of a front pool fed by a rear reservoir via a pipe; the size of the basins ranged from 1 to 7 m 3 . The reservoirs were supplied with both rainwater and the public aqueduct.

In its first centuries as a city, Pompeii obtained most of its water from underground cisterns, which were fed by rainwater collected from rooftops.
