"Het herinneringsbankje van aluminium voor Menthol en Roosje heeft de afgelopen dagen vorm gekregen onder een laag gietzand. Het kunstzinnige zitobject kwam in onderdelen onder het zand vandaan.
De twee zittingen vormden het sluitstuk: na een nachtje afkoelen bij non-ferro gieterij Christenhusz zijn ze klaar voor verdere bewerking bij Jonkman Coating. Kunstenaar Evert Strobos maakt het onderstel.
Geboortehuis
Eind september krijgt het bankje zijn plek op de hoek van de Enschedese- en de Drienerstraat, naast het geboortehuis van Roosje Borchert. Kunstenaar Carel Lanters is vlakbij, in een leegstaand winkelpand aan de Nieuwstraat schuin tegenover eetcafé De Appel, drie maanden druk geweest met het levensgrote model.
Het bankje dat deze week werd gegoten bij gieterij Christenhusz is een eerbetoon aan de eerste zwarte Hengeloër Joseph Sylvester die beter bekend stond als Menthol, en zijn echtgenote Roosje. Het is een initiatief van Hengeloër Antek Olszanowski, directeur van het Overijsselse antidiscriminatiebureau Artikel 1, dat de twee als rolmodel in het streven naar meer verdraagzaamheid ziet.
Routineklus
Voor de mannen van Christenhusz aan de Parelstraat, die onder meer de twee zittingen goten van het bankje waarop aan beide kanten kan worden gezeten, is het min of meer een routineklus, zegt bedrijfsleider Wim Pluijgers. De gloeiend hete, vloeibare aluminium wordt bij een temperatuur van 740 graden in de zandvorm gegoten. Pluijgers: "De ouwe jongens van Stork kennen dit nog wel."
Christenhusz is een bekend adres onder kunstenaars als het om aluminium gaat. "We draaien sinds 1981, heel Nederland staat vol met objecten die wij hebben gegoten. Maar dit bankje is het eerste kunstwerk dat in Hengelo komt te staan."
Belangstelling
Menthol stond het afgelopen jaar weer volop in de belangstelling in Hengelo. Met onder meer een boek, een theatervoorstelling en het plaatsen van een plaquette op het graf van Menthol en Roosje op het kerkhof aan de Deurningerstraat."

The two seats formed the final piece: after a night of cooling at the Christenhusz non-ferrous foundry, they are ready for further processing at Jonkman Coating. Artist Evert Strobos makes the base.
Birthplace

Christenhusz is a well-known address among artists when it comes to aluminum. "We have been running since 1981, the whole of the Netherlands is full of objects that we have cast. But this bench is the first work of art to be placed in Hengelo."
Interest
Menthol was again in the spotlight in Hengelo last year. Including a book, a theater performance and the placing of a plaque on the grave of Menthol and Roosje in the cemetery on Deurningerstraat."
