Een delftsblauw beeld dat een Woordspeling uitbeeld tussen het oude woord wiefie wat betekend vrouw en wifi wat tegenwoordig natuurlijk veel bekender is..

"Kunstwerk 't Wiefie
Waarschijnlijk is dit wel één van de bekendste beelden van Hengelo: ’t Wiefie. Te vinden op de hoek van de Enschedesestraat met de Beurstraat. Maar wie heeft dit prachtige kunstwerk eigenlijk gemaakt en waar staat het voor?

Het beeld staat sinds oktober 2012 op deze plek. Het kunstwerk is door de gemeente aangekocht van kunstenares Guusje Beverdam voor de kunstroute. In eerste instantie had het beeld geen naam. TC Tubantia schreef destijds een wedstrijd uit voor een naam en Anke Peeters Weem kwam met de winnende naam Wiefie. Een draadloos netwerk noemen we wifi en in het Twents kunnen we een vrouw een ‘wief’ noemen, was de uitleg van Anke.

Maar terug naar de kunstenares.

Guusje Beverdam
De Hengelose kunstenares Guusje Beverdam is al meer dan 35 jaar werkzaam als beeldend kunstenaar. Ze maakt felkleurige, keramische beelden die soms kitscherig zijn. Een beetje humor in de kunst, dat moet kunnen. Haar werk is altijd een reactie op een bepaalde gebeurtenis, op de grote thema’s in het leven. In 2013 werd Guusje gekozen tot Kunstvrouw 2012 van Overijssel. Naast het ’t Wiefie ken je misschien ook wel het hartenbankje of liefdesbankje in Enschede.

"Artwork 't Wiefie
This is probably one of the most famous images of Hengelo: 't Wiefie. Can be found on the corner of Enschedesestraat and Beurstraat. But who actually created this beautiful work of art and what does it stand for?

The statue has been at this location since October 2012. The artwork was purchased by the municipality from artist Guusje Beverdam for the art route. At first the statue had no name. TC Tubantia organized a competition for a name at the time and Anke Peeters Weem came up with the winning name Wiefie. We call a wireless network WiFi and in Twente we can call a woman a 'wief', was Anke's explanation.

But back to the artist.

Guusje Beverdam
The Hengelo artist Guusje Beverdam has been working as a visual artist for more than 35 years. She makes brightly colored ceramic sculptures that are sometimes kitschy. A little humor in art should be possible. Her work is always a response to a specific event, to the major themes in life. In 2013, Guusje was chosen as Art Woman 2012 of Overijssel. In addition to the 't Wiefie, you may also know the heart bench or love bench in Enschede.
