Vers 1860, Joseph Robert-Lapayrière et sa femme, habitants du Dorat, perdirent leurs deux enfants, Clément (21 ans) et Jeanne (16 ans). Ils étaient désormais sans héritiers.
À cette époque, Le Dorat manquait d’eau potable et se trouvait sans réserve en cas d’incendie. Or, vers 1868, un professeur du petit séminaire, l’abbé Pierre-Eugène Rougerie, plus tard évêque de Pamiers, établit un nivellement permettant de conduire en ville une eau abondante venant de la colline de Pierres-Blanches, dominée par des rochers de quartz. Le conseil municipal décida de faire exécuter les travaux estimés à 55 000 francs1, mais il ne vota qu’un crédit de 15 000 francs. Les Robert-Lapayrière offrirent alors les 40 000 francs restant pour la construction de la conduite, d’environ 6 km, et l’établissement des bornes-fontaines.
Le conseil municipal accepta le don et décida l’érection d’une fontaine monumentale en signe de reconnaissance. Le projet, dessiné par Pierre-Amédée Brouillet, s’élevait à 10 000 francs. Touchés par la représentation en pied de leurs enfants sur le haut-relief en bronze, les Robert-Lapayrière prirent la moitié de cette somme à leur charge.
Le monument fut inauguré le 24 novembre 1872."
[EN] "The Lapayrière fountain, also known as the Monument to Jeanne and Clément Robert-Lapayrière, located on Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly Place du Marché, in Le Dorat (Haute-Vienne), is a work by sculptor Pierre-Amédée Brouillet, inaugurated in 1872.
Around 1860, Joseph Robert-Lapayrière and his wife, residents of Le Dorat, lost their two children, Clément (21) and Jeanne (16). They were now without heirs.
At the time, Le Dorat was short of drinking water and had no reserves in case of fire. Around 1868, Abbé Pierre-Eugène Rougerie, a teacher at the minor seminary and later bishop of Pamiers, established a levelling system to bring abundant water to the town from the Pierres-Blanches hill, dominated by quartz rocks. The municipal council decided to carry out the work, estimated at 55,000 francs1 , but only voted a credit of 15,000 francs. The Robert-Lapayrière family then offered the remaining 40,000 francs for the construction of the 6 km pipe and the installation of the hydrants.
The town council accepted the donation and decided to erect a monumental fountain as a sign of their gratitude. The project, designed by Pierre-Amédée Brouillet, cost 10,000 francs. The Robert-Lapayrière family were moved by the full-length representation of their children on the bronze high relief, and agreed to pay half the cost.
The monument was inaugurated on November 24, 1872."
