Like Noorbeek, Mheer was dependent on the church of 's Gravenvoer as a 'quarta cappella' until the 17th century. Due to the increasing influence of the lords of Mheer, it is likely that the church was built near the castle around 1626. Then the ties between Noorbeek and Mheer became less close.
The current church must have been preceded by at least two church buildings, one from about 1626, consecrated in 1665 by the Bishop of Liège, and one from about 1786, built after alarming reports about the disastrous condition of the predecessor. When this church was on the one hand too small and on the other hand it turned out to be in very poor condition, P. Cuypers built the current church on the same site in the years 1876-1881, actually intended as a church for Mheer, Banholt and Terhorst. Because the church was not built halfway between Mheer and Banholt, the villagers of Banholt built their own church, which has led to great tensions.
