Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Coleman Hawkins learned to play the piano at the age of five and soon thereafter, the cello. But by the age of nine, he had discovered the saxophone and by the age of twelve was being paid to perform with local dance bands. Although proficient with all the variations of the instrument, he settled on the tenor saxophone as his true calling.

Hawkin’s big break came while performing in Kansas City in 1921, when he was asked to tour with Mamie Smith and her Jazz Hounds. This led to his first recording sessions and by 1923, was living in New York and a big part of the Harlem jazz scene. Over the next four decades he would perform with many notable entertainers including the likes of Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Mildred Bailey, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Benny Goodman to name just a few. Though most often associated with the big bands of the swing era, Coleman Hawkins is generally credited with bringing the saxophone to the forefront of jazz with his solo improvisations.

Coleman Hawkins continued to perform and record well into the 1960s. His last performance was just a month before his death from liver disease in 1969. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
