"We find the story of the construction in the book of Chapters of the Collegiate Church existing in the parish archive, and in it we read a summary of what happened:

“The convent of San Agustín de Descalzos was founded with the license of the superiors, King and Archbishop of Granada, and consent of this City in the year 1617 on the site that was the hermitage of San Sebastián on the road to Loja. And the City gave him 27 marshes of land in the ejido of Puerta de Loja for the situation and the Church and they fenced them and made a garden for the community's recreation. And in the year 1617, Fr. Miguel de la Soledad, Prior of said convent, began to open the foundations to build a new and capable Church with Chapels, since the one there was was very small, and in the year of 1618 he continued with these sayings. foundations by Father Fr. Isidro de Santa Teresa, Prior of said convent. And in the year from 1619 to March 1620, the said Brother Isidro, who went to the Chapter, left the work completely surrounded by walls, in addition to being two yards high and the buttresses of the main chapel raised three yards high."
