George Caleb Bingham was born in Virginia but spent most of his life in Missouri. An accomplished portrait artist, he painted this scene in 1845 while spending some time in central Missouri. It was one of several paintings that he sent to the American Art-Union in New York for promotion and exhibition. Bingham had originally given it the name “French Trader & Half breed Son” but the Art-Union thought that that name was a little too specific (and maybe a little controversial) so they renamed it “Fur Traders Descending the Missouri.”
The postal card was issued in 1990 at a time when the U.S. Postal Service was experimenting with pre-stamped cards with a higher-quality image on the reverse. In this case the image was the complete painting by Bingham. The postal cards were sold at a premium over the face value of the stamp.
