Old City Walls - Krakow, Poland - Preserved Architectural Remnants and Ruins on Waymarking.com

In the thirteenth century, Kraków's city walls were established around the Old Town. It had 39 towers, 8 gates and a 6 meter wide moat.

Until the 19th century, Kraków had this massive medieval city walls. However, it was very expensive to maintain the towers and walls, and waste flowed into the moat. It was therefore decided to demolish the buildings.

However, the Polish architect and professor Feliks Radwanski was opposed to the demolition. Through a court case, it was possible to have three of the towers and a hundred meters of the city wall preserved for posterity. Subsequently, stones with plaques have been placed where the towers have stood. These can be seen together with remains of the city wall. (visit link)
