A postcard from the last decade of the nineteenth century shows a view of the only surviving former defensive bastion, which used to be part of the city walls near the Saxon Gate. As far as the façade and roof are concerned, interesting baroque modifications to the bastion can be seen. Above the bastion still stands the new building of a younger tenement house, built on the corner of the former Saxon Street, now Roosevelt Street, and the current 5 May Gardens Street, formerly called Otakar Gardens. These were not among the safest places in Pilsen, and so they were nicknamed "Plzenské Abruzzy" after the Italian mountain range famous for its numerous unrelenting robbers.
