In 1973, Post Italiane’s annual Christmas issue featured three works by early Renaissance sculptor Agostino di Duccio. All are bas-reliefs. Two of them are from the Malatesta temple in Rimini but this one, which was formerly housed in the Santa Maria del Carmine church in Florence, is on display at the Bargello Museum. The elegant representation of the Madonna and Child surrounded by festive angels has been placed in an altar taken from the church of the Ognissanti in Florence. It is believed to date from between the years 1463 and 1470. Plaster or stucco casts of this relief exist, some of which have been painted over, but this is the marble original.
