På Assensvej er der en markeret vandresti mellem nummer 89 og 91. Følg stien til du når til skovbrynet omkring 200 meter fremme. I stedet for at følge stien mod øst skal du dreje mod vest. Gå forbi de shelters der ligger i skovbrynet og stenen findes omkring 150 meter fremme retning vest.

Da Sallinge Herreds rettersted blev etableret på toppen af et markant bakkedrag nord for Espe i middelalderen, skete det på et sted, hvor døden tidligere havde været i centrum. På kort fra tiden omkring 1800 kan det ses, at bakketoppen har været kronet af en gravhøj, utvivlsomt fra ældre bronzealder (ca. 1500 f.Kr.). Ved foden af denne høj anlagdes en fladmarksgravplads i romersk jernalder (ca. 200 e.Kr). Høj og gravplads forsvandt ved grusgravning sidst i 1800-tallet, men dele af de dødes gravgods blev reddet og findes nu på Nationalmuseet.

Retterstedet var i brug frem til 1600-tallet, og de henrettede blev antagelig jordet på stedet. Måske er det årsagen til, at der er knyttet en række makabre og uhyggelige sagn til området.

I slutningen af 1800-tallet rejste Geodætisk Institut en sten med højdeangivelse nær bakkens top - og antagelig tæt på det sted, hvor galgen har stået. Under den kolde krig rejstes på det højeste sted et observationstårn, hvorfra man kunne iagttage fjendtlige fly. Dette tårn stod indtil slutningen af 1900-tallet, men et betonfundament afslører dets oprindelige placering.

Galgebakken er således et sted med en lang og broget historie, hvor døden har spillet en central rolle.

On Assensvej there is a marked footpath between numbers 89 and 91. Follow the path until you reach the edge of the forest about 200 meters ahead. Instead of following the path east, turn west. Go past the shelters at the edge of the forest and the stone is found about 150 meters further west.

When Sallinge Herred's place of justice was established on top of a significant ridge north of Espe in the Middle Ages, it happened in a place where death had previously been central. On maps from around 1800, it can be seen that the top of the hill has been crowned by a burial mound, undoubtedly from the older Bronze Age (approx. 1500 BC). At the foot of this mound, a flat burial ground was built in the Roman Iron Age (approx. 200 AD). The mound and burial ground disappeared due to gravel digging at the end of the 19th century, but parts of the grave goods of the dead were saved and are now in the National Museum.

The execution site was in use until the 17th century, and the executed were presumably buried there. Perhaps this is the reason why a number of macabre and creepy legends are linked to the area.

At the end of the 19th century, the Geodetic Institute erected a stone with a height indication near the top of the hill - and presumably close to the place where the gallows has stood. During the Cold War, an observation tower was erected at the highest point, from which enemy aircraft could be observed. This tower stood until the late 1900s, but a concrete foundation reveals its original location.

Galgebakken is thus a place with a long and colorful history, where death has played a central role.
