"The church of Sainte-Cécile is a place of worship in the Catholic tradition erected in 1913 and 1914 according to the plans of the architects Viau and Venne. The stone building, in the Beaux-Arts style, has a Latin cross plan composed of a nave, a transept and a projecting choir with a flat apse.

It is topped with a copper roof with two straight slopes. The facade, built into a gable wall, is flanked by two bell towers at the ends and pierced by a rose window in the upper part, in the center.

The bell towers are slightly set back from the central projection comprising the three portals; they are topped with a dome and surmounted by a cross.

The main portal, framed by columns, is topped by an ornamented stone arch. The openings of the church are arched, with the exception of the rose windows on the facade and the arms of the transepts and a few loophole windows. The crossing of the transept, octagonal in shape, is marked by a pinnacle.

The building is extended at the rear by a one-story rectangular sacristy and the presbytery which is connected to it. The church of Sainte-Cécile is located at the head of an island comprising residential buildings. It is located in a former working-class neighborhood of Trois-Rivières.

Historical information
The Wabasso Cotton textile factory, founded in 1907, is one of the most important companies in Trois-Rivières in the 20th century. For several decades, it employed hundreds of workers. Around 1910 all the available lots south of rue des Commissaires were built. The increase in population in this part of the district, called “Hertel sector”, led to the creation of a new parish. The parish of Sainte-Cécile was therefore canonically established on May 3, 1912. Construction work on the church and the presbytery began the following year under the direction of the entrepreneur Anselme Dubé, and the place of worship was inaugurated in July 1914.

The plans for the building were designed by Louis-Alphonse Venne (1875-1934) and Joseph Dalbé Viau (1881-1938). The latter were among the most sought-after architects in the French-speaking institutional environment in Montreal between 1912 and 1934.

The interior decoration of the church, in Beaux-Arts style, was completed in 1928 by François-Xavier Renaud, a Montreal painter. Subsequently, the building underwent several additions, transformations and renovations. For example, in 1948, the wooden side porticos were replaced by new stone ones and an annex to the sacristy was built according to the plans of the architects Gascon and Parant. An access ramp for people with reduced mobility was also added around 2010.

The church of Sainte-Cécile was closed to worship in 2008 and sold the following year. It is transformed into a sports arena and offices."

"L'église de Sainte-Cécile est un lieu de culte de tradition catholique érigé en 1913 et 1914 selon les plans des architectes Viau et Venne. Le bâtiment en pierre, de style Beaux-Arts, présente un plan en croix latine composé d'une nef, d'un transept et d'un chœur en saillie à chevet plat.

Il est coiffé d'un toit en cuivre à deux versants droits. La façade, aménagée dans un mur pignon, est flanquée de deux clochers aux extrémités et percée d'une rosace dans la partie supérieure, au centre.

Les clochers sont légèrement en retrait par rapport à la saillie centrale comprenant les trois portails; ils sont coiffés d'un dôme et surmontés d'une croix.

Le portail principal, encadré par des colonnes, est surmonté d'un arc ornementé en pierre. Les ouvertures de l'église sont cintrées, à l'exception des rosaces de la façade et des bras de transepts et de quelques fenêtres en meurtrière. La croisée du transept, de forme octogonale, est marquée par un clocheton.

L'édifice est prolongé à l'arrière par une sacristie rectangulaire d'un étage et par le presbytère qui y est relié. L'église de Sainte-Cécile est implantée en tête d'un îlot comprenant des bâtiments résidentiels. Elle est située dans un ancien quartier ouvrier de Trois-Rivières.

Informations historiques
La manufacture de textile Wabasso Cotton, fondée en 1907, est l'une des plus importantes entreprises de Trois-Rivières au XXe siècle. Pendant quelques décennies, elle emploie des centaines d'ouvriers. Vers 1910 tous les lots disponibles au sud de la rue des Commissaires sont bâtis. L'augmentation de la population dans cette partie du quartier, appelée « secteur Hertel », mène à la création d'une nouvelle paroisse. La paroisse de Sainte-Cécile est donc érigée canoniquement le 3 mai 1912. Les travaux de construction de l'église et du presbytère débutent l'année suivante sous la direction de l'entrepreneur Anselme Dubé, et le lieu de culte est inauguré en juillet 1914.

Les plans de l'édifice sont conçus par Louis-Alphonse Venne (1875-1934) et Joseph Dalbé Viau (1881-1938). Ces derniers figurent parmi les architectes les plus recherchés dans le milieu institutionnel francophone à Montréal entre 1912 et 1934.

Le décor intérieur de l'église, de style Beaux-Arts, est achevé en 1928 par François-Xavier Renaud, artiste peintre montréalais. Par la suite, le bâtiment a connu plusieurs ajouts, transformations et rénovations. Par exemple, en 1948, les portiques latéraux en bois sont remplacés par de nouveau en pierre et une annexe à la sacristie est aménagée selon les plans des architectes Gascon et Parant. Une rampe d'accès pour personne à mobilité réduite est également ajoutée vers 2010.

L'église de Sainte-Cécile est fermée au culte en 2008 et vendue l'année suivante. Elle est transformée en plateau sportif et en bureaux."
