Huntington Bank has bought the rights to name the arena Huntington Center for $2.1 million officials announced Friday.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The Lucas County Arena, which opened in October with only a temporary title, has a new name and sponsor. Huntington Bank has bought the rights to call the arena Huntington Center for $2.1 million, officials announced Friday.

Lucas County Commissioners and bank officials say the money from the six-year deal will go toward paying down the arena's debt.

There are also three additional six-year renewal options which have the potential to make it an $11 million deal, roughly 10 percent of the arena's $105 million price tag.

Lucas County Commissioners President Pete Gerken (D) says this is "a great day for the arena, for the community."

Huntington Bank Regional President Sharon Speyer says the bank saw this as an incredible opportunity to express their commitment, passion and hope for the economic redevelopment of downtown Toledo.

If the renewal options are not picked up it could leave gap in the long term funding for the arena. However, Commissioner Gerken says if the county can negotiate a naming rights deal during such tough economic times, he is confident the county will be able to do so in the future. More than 400,000 folks have attended concerts, hockey games or other entertainment events at the arena since it opened six months ago.

The arena is home of the Toledo Walleye hockey team and continues to draw big acts like Elton John, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.
