The almshouses founded in 1666 to house 8 paupers but now belong to Durham University. They replaced a grammar school that had stood on the site since 1414.
Cosin had become the Bishop of Durham in 1660 and remained so until his death in 1672.
Cosin had his own coat of arms and so the arms above the door are of a shield divided in half vertically with the arms pertaining to the Bishop of Durham on the left and his own arms on the right.
The arms of the Bishop of Durham are a blue shield divided into 4 quarters with a white lion on its hind legs on each of the 4 quarters. On top of the shield is a bishop's Mitre.

In heraldry a mascle is a lozenge with a smaller lozenge-shaped hole in the centre. In essence the lozenge is a diamond shape.
