Late Gothic style water castle among the meadows surrounding the Úhlava river north of Klatovy was founded in 1480 by Puta Švihovský, then a rich and influential Czech nobleman. First part of the castle was finished in 1489, the rest in 1510. In the 18th century the whole was rebuilt into a granary, in the middle of 20th century the castle was re-opened to public.
The castle was facing demolition after the Thirty Year’s War. However, it was successfully defended and at least part of the castle was saved. It was then used to serve agricultural purposes until the 20th century, when it was designated as castle ruins. Nevertheless, Eugen Cernín contributed to the protection of this Gothic monument in the 1930s and was able to provide the castle with its much-needed repairs.
