Alva, Florida is an unincorporated community located in east Lee County along the Caloosahatchee River. Situated 18 miles east of Fort Myers and 12 miles west of LaBelle it is the halfway point between the two towns.

Alva, Florida was settled in 1885 by Captain Manuel A. Gonzalez who was a Spanish immigrant from Cuba. He purchased the land from the federal government and began farming the area, growing oranges, grapefruits and vegetables. Captain Gonzalez also operated a store and post office out of his home which served as the town’s first center of commerce.

Later a combination general store and post office was constructed. (See B&W photo in gallery).
The building was built by John and Janes English. Enlarged and operated by Ben Clay after the 1895 freeze until it went bankrupt in 1903. It was then taken over by Harvie Heitman, but still operated by Clay until it burned in 1912.

The current post office building was constructed in the 1960's and has served the community since then.

Visit Instructions:
To post a log to an existing U.S. Post Office waymark, you will need to post a picture of the front of the building, with the name of the post office in the background if that is possible.

A description of your Post Office is required, such as when it was built, history, outstanding or unique features, population of the city or town, just do a quick internet search and find an interesting bit of information about the city or town and add it to the long description, to make it more interesting. Even just adding in the population of the area can give others an idea of how many people this post office serves. This description should be at least three sentences.

If your Post Office has any unusual or unique features that you feel others would enjoy viewing, additional pictures are always welcome.
Including your gps device in the picture is not necessary, but wouldn't be cause for disapproval, as long as all other details of your log are acceptable.
