James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) liked to say that artists are born and not made, and that the six years he spent studying art in New York, London and Paris were a waste of time. During his long and prolific career, Flagg worked for or contributed to all the major magazines and periodicals of the day: Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Hearst’s International, Judge Magazine, Life, McClures, Photoplay, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post and The American Weekly to name just a few. But what he is most remembered for today are the 46 recruitment posters he made for the U.S. Government during World War I. The most famous of these is the one with ‘Uncle Sam’ pointing and saying, ‘I want you for the U.S. Army.’

Flagg was also an accomplished portrait painter and sculptor. His Uncle Sam poster could be considered a self-portrait since he used himself as the model (aged appropriately, of course). Flagg’s long career lasted beyond the age of illustration. His World War I work was dusted off for World War II but failing eyesight forced him to abandon his art later in life. He died in New York City at the age of 82 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. His headstone bears the inscription ‘The redemption of all things by Beauty everlasting’ by George Bernard Shaw.
