"Considerada como la catedral de la Subbética, esta iglesia responde a los cánones artísticos gótico-mudéjares y renacentistas. En este lugar fue donde se encontraba la antigua sinagoga y luego mezquita de la ciudad, hasta que en 1240 se adaptó al culto cristiano. La iglesia actual fue iniciada en 1498, en la cabecera, junto con las portadas de la sacristía y la exterior de Ntra. Sra. de la Umbría. El resto del edificio es renacentista, presenta tres naves con grandes pilares donde se apoyan arcos apuntados de inspiración mudéjar, así como una portada principal de claras influencias clásicas. En su interior destaca el retablo mayor manierista, está elaborado en su parte arquitectónica por Jerónimo Hernández y en su imaginería por Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo. También sobresale la magnífica capilla del Sagrario, realizada entre 1740 y 1772 sobre trazas del arquitecto local Leonardo Antonio de Castro y considerada como una de las joyas del barroco cordobés, y una de las obras escultóricas más importantes del barroco andaluz."
