The chapel located here called Our Lady of Aflitos, but the story that people remember is that of the soldier Francisco José das Chagas, AKA "Chaguinha." Chaguinha was sentenced by the government to death by hanging. At the execution of the execution, in the Plaza of the Gallows, the rope broke two times The public watching the execution attributed it as a "miracle", and cried out "Freedom" (Liberdade). Igoring the public's plea, the executed him on the third try.

Chaguinha was burined in a cemetary which now is covered by the chapel. People pray to Chaguinha, and some of the faithful say that their prayers have come true. The doors of the chapel are covered by prayers, tacked on by the faithful.
