Geared Shay locomotives were not much on speed but could effortlessly pull heavy loads up steep grades and around tight curves. This made them the preferred choice of the logging industry, and this one was no exception. Originally built in 1924 for the Cascade Timber Co. of Reliance, WA as #108, it became Long-Bell Lumber #1008 in 1939 and finally Pickering Lumber #8 in 1952.
After retirement in the 1960s, old no. 8 spent time with several collectors/preservationists before finding its way to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad where it now sits outside the blimp hangar at the Tillamook Air Museum, and from the looks of things, is in need of some TLC.
