The design of this bronze sculpture which is called Pattinatrice in Italian, or Pattinatrice II or Grande Pattinatrice II, as there are multiple versions, was conceived in the late 1950s. At that time, the Sicilian-born Emilio Greco was creating feminine-form sculptures with somewhat elongated or contorted features. There is a similar sculpture in the Emilio Greco Museum in Orvieto.

As part of San Marino’s Open Air Museum, it appeared on this postage stamp, one of a set of ten definitives issued by the tiny republic in 1987. It also appeared on that country’s 1974 Europa issue - two different views of the same sculpture. The Skater is located in the Crossbowman’s Quarry along with several other works that are part of the Open Air Museum.
