The history of the garden is as follows: In 1832 to widen a street a shed to store gunpowder was demolished by the city. In it's place a plaza was constructed. People started calling it Largo de Polvora (Gunpowder Plaza) In 1978, mayor Olavo Setúbal officialized the name and constructed a Japanese garden to comemererate the 70th anniversary of Japanese immigration in Sao Paulo. The park has two bridge, and three ponds.
