[EN] “It is Before the current one, there was an old Puerta de Alcalá, which was built to commemorate the arrival of Margaret of Austria, who was the wife of Philip lll of Spain, to Madrid. However, Charles Ill did not like the design and decided to destroy the monument and build a new one within a project for improving the city.

The king commissioned the architect Francesco Sabatini, who took nine years to finish the work. The original project had two finishes, which were finally melted into one. This is the reason why the facades of the Puerta de Alcalá are different from each other.

The Puerta de Alcalá, which is located in the Plaza de la Independencia in Madrid, was finally inaugurated in 1778, It used to be one of the main access gates to the capital and was named after the road which travelled towards the town Alcalá de Henares.”
