The spa center of the city of Karlovy Vary is situated along the course of the Teplá River. On both banks of the river, there are promenades widely used by spa guests. The promenades are lined with spa buildings, hotels, and cafes, creating a tranquil pedestrian zone. Essentially, just behind this row of buildings, steep slopes covered with trees rise on both sides of the river. The wooded slopes offer numerous walking trails with impressive views of the spa town and its surroundings.
In the center of the spa town, several typical spa structures, such as colonnades, can be found, which have often been depicted in photographs and postcards. The colonnades were mainly built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Perhaps one of the most photogenically famous is so-called Market Colonnade. Its name is derived from the former market that used to be here. The colonnade was built in 1882-1883, and between 1991 and 1993, it underwent a significant reconstruction. It is a wooden structure designed by architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer.
At the left end of the colonnade, the healing spring "Karel IV" emerges (spring temperature 62°C). The spring is named after the founder of the spa, Emperor Charles IV, who according to legend used to treat his ailing limbs here at this spring.
