Henrietta Benigna Justina von Zinzendorf lived from 1725-1789. She is best known for starting the institution that eventually became Moravian University and Moravian Academy.
On May 4, 1742, Countess Benigna, daughter of the Moravian leader Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf, founded the first boarding school for young women in the thirteen original colonies. It was originally called the Bethlehem Female Seminary, and offered instruction in writing, reading, household arts, and religion. It is to this institution that Moravian College and Moravian Academy trace their roots. She was only 16 yrs old when she set up the boarding school.
This statue of Benigna is a gift to Moravian College from its Alumni Association and from individual alumnae of Moravian College for Women. It was dedicated May 4, 1992, in commemoration of the College's 250th anniversary.
The Sculptor is Michael B. Price.
