The church is named after the bridge of the same name located in front of it at the time. Among the people of Leiden, the church is also known as the Coelie Church , after the last word of the Latin saying above the entrance, Hic Domus Dei est et Porta Coeli (This is the house of God and the gate to heaven, Genesis 28.17)."
