The plaque says, "On this site the Regina Hotel, the only building in Gastown to survive the fire of 1886. A small group of men trapped in the building fought to save their lives and managed to save the building as well. The Regina was demolished in 1906 and replaced by this fire-resistant iron & steel framed Edward Hotel.

At ten minutes past two O'Clock on June 13, 1886, there was a loud cry uttered in terror: Fire! Fire! Fire! It brought everyone who could hear into the streets. For two or three minutes they heard the roar of the approaching fire.

They saw it rise like a long wall high above the tall trees of the forest, and taken bound down like a wild beast on the devoted city. Destruction was almost total. By three O'Clock only a few houses and the Regina Hotel were left standing."
