Christmas stamps have been issued more or less perennially by the Vatican since the late 1950s. They often depict nativity scenes, madonnas or other images of the Holy Family from artwork found in museums or churches. For the year 2000, the nativity panel in the basilica of St. Francis in Assisi was chosen for a set of four special Christmas stamps. One shows the entire panel while the other three show details of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus from this same panel.

This particular fresco is found in the lower church, specifically, the ceiling of the north transept. It’s included in a series of scenes from the childhood of Christ. They date from 1315-1320 and are attributed to Giotto or his workshop or followers - no one knows for sure. The entire church, upper and lower, is lavishly decorated with frescoes. Those in the upper church depict the life of St. Francis.
