"In this temple, located at the top of the hill where the Historic Center of Betanzos is located, you can see the transition from Romanesque to Gothic.
The current façade, as we know it, was built between 1899 and 1901. The current towers, in the shape of a needle, can be seen from everywhere and constitute the hallmark of the “sky line” of the City of Knights. Betanzos. Despite the reconstruction, the Gothic façade dedicated to Santiago Apostol, represented on his horse, is preserved.
In the middle of the s. XVI, the hexagonal municipal clock tower is built, attached to the church.
Inside, you can guess the Jacobite character of this church located on the English Way to Compostela, it can be guessed in one of its capitals with figures of pilgrims and scallop shells. Of its four chapels, the Archdeacon chapel stands out with shapes that remind us of the chapel of the Hospital of the Catholic Monarchs of Santiago.
The Elizabethan altarpiece of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (16th century), the work of Cornielles of Holland, is considered one of the most representative pieces of the Plateresque style.
You can also see the tombs of the archdeacon Don Pedro de Ben, a relative of Don Pedro, and semi-hidden in the Lourdes Chapel, we can discover the tomb of Gómez García de la Torre."
