The lion is resting, in a lay-down pose, as he would be on the fringe of the pride and watching his possessions, the females. He looks unawares, but he is on guard to protect HIS pride.
This state is facing away from the street and along side a garage by the alley. He is very weather beaten, and is not on Google street scene, if you go there to look, which tells me he has been placed here in the last couple of years.
