This pillar is situated on the summit of The Knock, a 217 metre high hill that used to be the site of an ancient hill-fort two miles to the north of the coastal town of Largs, where it can be seen as a grassy peak looking northwards from the town seafront.
The hill is the highest part of land between the coast to the west, and Brisbane Glen, the valley of the Noddsdale Water, to the east, with higher moorland to the north and east. The pillar remains in good condition and views as expected are spectacular to the south down the Ayrshire coast, and west across the sea to the islands.
STEEPNESS: A short, sharp climb in the final rise after a steady climb up to the high point to the north along the coastal path.
TERRAIN: Grassy paths, muddy in the wet in places.
ACCESSIBILITY: The route utilises an inland part of the Ayrshire Coastal Path which crosses within half a mile over the northern shoulder of the hill between the Brisbane Glen Road to the east and another minor road near Knock Castle to the west, both easily reachable from Largs.
NAVIGATION: The waymarked coastal path should be followed in either direction from the west of east until reaching the high point, where a grassy path leads southwards to eventually begin the final climb up the hills northern flank.
DANGER: None apart from slippery terrain or livestock on the hill.
