The summit of Sassafras Mountain lies directly on the border between the U.S. states of North and South Carolina and reaches an elevation of 3554 ft. above sea level. That may not seem like much especially since there are mountains almost twice that high a mere 20 miles to the north, but it is nevertheless, the highest elevation in South Carolina. And you can drive your car right to the top: no need to hike miles to get there, unless you want to, of course. The road to the top is named the F. Van Clayton Memorial Highway which intersects US 178 at Rocky Bottom, SC.
I’ve been to the summit of Sassafras Mountain on a couple of occasions in different seasons and have included photos from both trips. On one of these (the one with my children and their grandpa) you can see the distinctive leaves of the sassafras tree which gave the mountain its name. In 2019, some renovation was done to the summit area: Trees were removed, and an observation platform was added for better views.
