El baño de vapor (Hammam) es uno de los elementos más caracteristicos de la cultura islámica y uno de sus rasgos diferenciadores,l. Su uso purificador supone la ablución mayor, previa a la oración, por lo que es frecuente encontrar baños en las proximidades, o incluso formando parte de las mezquitas. Pero el uso del baño no cumple solo una función purificadora de carácter religioso; es también un espacio para la higiene y, con frecuencia, un lugar de encuentro social.
Este baño fue construido para dotar a la mezquita Aljama de la ciudad de la Alhambra que estuvo ubicada en el lugar que hoy ocupa la contigua iglesia de Santa Maria de la Alhambra, El acceso al baño tenia su entrada original por la Calle Real Alta."

The steam bath (Hammam) is one of the most characteristic elements of Islamic culture and one of its distinguishing features. Its purifying use supposes the major ablution, previous to the prayer, reason why it is frequent to find baths in the proximities, or even forming part of the mosques. But the use of the bath not only fulfills a purifying function of religious character; it is also a space for hygiene and, frequently, a place of social meeting.
This bath was built to equip the Aljama mosque of the city of the Alhambra that was located in the place that today occupies the adjacent church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra. The access to the bath had its original entrance through the Calle Real Alta."
