The Storting building is located at 22 Karl Johans gate. Both the outside and inside of the building was designed Emil Victor Langlet, a Swedish architect. The yellow brick building combines several architectural styles.
"Construction of the Storting building began on 3 August 1860, the foundation stone was laid on 10 October 1861 and the Storting moved in on 5 March 1866. The total cost (incl. fixtures) was 239,333 special dalers or just under NOK 960,000. (approx. NOK 57 million in 2007) To begin with, the Storting had a number of "tenants": Norway's Geographical Survey, the Director of Canal, the National Audit Office and the National Archives. Eventually, the entire building was needed, and the tenants had to move.
The Storting building and the war:
On the night of 9 April, the Storting was evacuated, largely thanks to the personal initiative of Storting President Hambro. The Storting held two meetings on 9 April: the first in a cinema in Hamar and the last at Elverum folkehøgskole.
The Storting building was occupied until the afternoon of 9 April. In the first days, the building was used as an embargo for German troops. Eventually Reichskommissar Josef Terboven moved in with his administration. Terboven himself chose the Eidsvoldsgalleriet for his private office. The pictures of the Eidsvoll men were replaced by German landscape paintings, but fortunately not destroyed."
