This odd-shaped tank engine was built by the Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes-Barre, PA, for Waddle & Fitch, a short-lived railroad contractor in Indiana. After a couple of stints with east-coast mining and industrial operations, it moved west, to California, winding up with the Michigan-California Lumber Company in 1916. Michigan-California ran about 40 miles of 3’-gauge railroad in El Dorado County, CA, in support of their logging operations. Their small fleet of steam engines consisted mainly of Shay locomotives which performed best in the rugged terrain of the Sierra Nevada foothills. However, they did own a couple of 0-4-0 switchers that performed yard duty at the mill, but even that was usually as back-up to the Shays.
Michigan-California ceased their rail operations in 1949 after a fire destroyed one of their terminal buildings. Though considered unattractive by some, little #11 was nevertheless placed on display in front of Michigan-California’s mill at Camino, CA, in 1950. In 1994, it was moved to its current location in front of Timber Products Co. in Medford Oregon.
