The island of Great Cumbrae lies just off the west coast of Scotland in the northern part of Ayrshire and is relatively small with the only settlement being the town of Millport on its south side. Along the seafront is the war memorial commemorating the men from the island who were lost during WWI and WWII.

The memorial was built by Robert Gray and unveiled on October 15th 1922. It features an octagonal base containing eight panels supporting a column which is topped by a lion holding the arms of Millport.

Two of the panels have the following inscriptions:

'TO THE MEMORY OF OUR HEROIC DEAD 1914-1919 1939-1945' 'CUMBRAE WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED 15th OCTOBER 1922'

Two panels have an engraved sword and wreath with one left blank. The remaining three contain the names, with one being the nineteen from WWII which was dedicated on August 18th 1946. The two other panels have 21 names each from WWI.
