JACKSON, MI - Fundraising goals were met for the restoration of the "Summer Night Tree" sculpture - until the sole bid to do the work came in.

The Jackson Public Arts Commission raised $40,000 to restore the 1978 sculpture, but the bid from Coats Industrial Painting of Otter Lake came in at $66,786.35. Jackson City Council unanimously awarded the bid at its Tuesday, July 11 meeting, contingent upon JPAC raising the remaining funds.

Money contributed so far comes from the following groups:
Weatherwax Foundation: $20,000
Jackson Arts Commission: $10,000
James A. and Faith Knight Foundation: $8,000
Samuel Higby Camp Foundation: $2,000
The sculpture was last restored 24 years ago. A request for a $320,000 restoration was denied by council in 2014. Protective paint coatings will be added once previous corroded coats are removed, among other tasks.

The 10-ton, 30-foot-tall sculpture was purchased for $152,000 in 1978, with a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and $102,000 from private contributions. "Summer Night Tree" was moved to the corner of E. Michigan Avenue and Francis Street in 2001.

The Pace Gallery in New York City appraised the welded steel sculpture at $4 million in 2015.
For more details on the sculpture and the restoration of it, view page 196 in the council's July 11 agenda packet.
