Well, Pennsylvania Power & Light is not the Pennsylvania Railroad, and this little fireless switcher is no Raymond Loewy GG1, but it does boast a modicum of streamlined design. It’s been said that the streamlined design tendencies of the 1920s and 30s were a little comedic in that certain elements meant to provide speed were applied to objects with no such requirements such as clocks, pencil sharpeners and, apparently, industrial switchers. I doubt that this locomotive set any speed records.
In any event, Pennsylvania Power & Light, an electric utility, owned several of these fireless switchers which they used to move coal around their power generating plants. At one time they owned the largest fireless switcher ever built: an 0-8-0 that’s now displayed at the railroad museum in Strasburg, PA. This 0-6-0 was more typical of PP&L’s switchers and is now parked in front of the historic 1874 train station in Tamaqua, PA. It was moved here from Jim Thorpe, PA, and seems to be missing a few parts like its main connecting rods.
