"History
In the 15th century, perhaps earlier, the city was administered by four industrial tribunals, one per district of the city. These notables met in the dependencies of the Comtale priory. This priory was destroyed during the great fire of Bourges, leading to the disappearance of the municipal archives.

To avoid another disaster, the mayor and aldermen decided in 1489 to build a town hall. They chose a location in the heart of the city. They decided to entrust the creation of plans and specifications called “Jacquet de Pigny masson” in the account of the municipal receiver and raised in 1490 by the sculptors Jacquet de Persigny and Jacquet Gendre. The hotel backed onto the surrounding wall with a courtyard with a well limited by a pierced enclosure wall and adorned by the coping along the street which was accessed by a gate and a wicket. There remains a corner turret which was part of a pavilion built in the 16th century. An arcaded building was built from 1619 to 1623 in place of the pavilion connecting the corner turret with the 15th century dwelling by the architects Jehan Le Juge and Gargault. The enclosure wall, the gate and the wicket were removed in the 18th century and replaced by an iron gate.

Colbert bought the Jacques-Cœur palace in 1679 from Charles de Laubespine, Marquis of Châteauneuf. He sold it in 1682 for 33,000 pounds to the municipal council, which transferred its services there.

Then, the aldermen sold the hotel to Henri Labbe de Changrand for the price of 8,164 pounds. The latter ceded it to the Jesuit fathers who made an annex there, the Petit Collège, which they occupied until 1762.

Sold as national property during the Revolution, it housed the normal school in 1833 and became the Petit Lycée, which would later depend on the high school named after one of its former students, Alain-Fournier. Édouard Branly taught there.

Architecture
The Hôtel des Échevins consists of a main building, flanked by a staircase tower reminiscent of that of the Jacques-Cœur palace in Bourges. Like many of the town's private mansions, the building was built astride the Gallo-Roman ramparts. It is to the architect Jehan Lejuge that we owe the perpendicular gallery, built in the Renaissance style, in 1623.

The Estève museum
Completely restored by the City of Bourges in 1983, it has housed the Estève museum since 1987, dedicated to the abstract painter Maurice Estève (1904-2001). The museum is spread over three levels and presents oils on canvas, works on paper and two tapestries. "

L'hôtel était adossé au mur d'enceinte avec une cour avec un puits limitée par un mur de clôture percé et orné par la margelle le long de la rue à laquelle on accédait par une porte et un guichet. Il subsiste une tourelle d'angle qui faisait partie d'un pavillon construit au XVIe siècle. Un bâtiment à arcades fut construit de 1619 à 1623 à la place du pavillon reliant la tourelle d'angle avec le logis du XVe siècle par les architectes Jehan Le Juge et Gargault. Le mur de clôture, la porte et le guichet furent supprimés au XVIIIe siècle et remplacés par une grille en fer.

Colbert acheta en 1679 le palais Jacques-Cœur à Charles de Laubespine, marquis de Châteauneuf. Il le revendit en 1682 pour 33 000 livres au conseil municipal, qui y transféra ses services.

Ensuite, les échevins vendirent l'hôtel à Henri Labbe de Changrand pour le prix de 8 164 livres. Ce dernier le céda aux pères Jésuites qui y firent une annexe, le Petit Collège, qu'ils occupèrent jusqu'en 1762.

Vendu comme bien national à la Révolution, il accueillit l'école normale en 1833 et devint le Petit Lycée, qui dépendra plus tard du lycée du nom d'un de ses anciens élèves, Alain-Fournier. Édouard Branly y enseigna.

Architecture
L'hôtel des Échevins est constitué d'un corps de logis, flanqué d'une tour-escalier rappelant celle du palais Jacques-Cœur de Bourges. Comme nombre des hôtels particuliers de la ville, l'édifice fut construit à cheval sur les remparts gallo-romains. C'est à l'architecte Jehan Lejuge que l'on doit la galerie perpendiculaire, construite dans le style Renaissance, en 1623.

Le musée Estève
Intégralement restauré par la Ville de Bourges en 1983, il accueille depuis 1987 le musée Estève, consacré au peintre abstrait Maurice Estève (1904-2001). Le musée se déploie sur trois niveaux et présente des huiles sur toile, des œuvres sur papier et deux tapisseries. "
