The Detroit Aero Modelers have been flying informally at first, then with City permission, in Rouge Park since the early ‘70s. We maintain a grass field southwest of the intersection of Joy Road and Spinoza Road. We have the luxury of three runways: two parallel going east to west, and one intersecting going north to south. It is a rare day when you cannot take off or land into the wind! We have benches for spectators and/or tired pilots, work tables for assembling and testing our planes and a grill for fun fly cooking. Two massive trees provide shade from the noonday sun in the pit area. Free street parking is available at the edge of the field along Spinoza.
We fly just bout every type of plane, helicopter, or multi-rotor, gas, glow or electric. About the only thing we can’t offer is a paved runway for turbine-powered jets (jets and grass don’t play well together!), or a paved circle for control-line flying. Our air space is bounded on the north by Joy Road, the east by Spinoza, and south and west by your visual acuity!
We are responsible for rolling the field annually and mowing it weekly during the flying season. Those are pretty much all of our financial responsibilities. As a result, we have one of the lowest member dues in the area. We offer instructors for novice pilots on an as-needed basis.
Come visit us! All you need to fly as a guest of a club member is a current AMA card. If you like what you see, we ask you to join us. We have no cap on the number of members allowed.
