"In the heart of the Albaycín we find the Aljibe de Trillo, a cistern from the Nasrid period, dating back to the 14th century and located at the end of the Callejón de Trillo. This is one of the places we should visit when we walk through the emblematic Granada neighborhood.
Both the alley and the cistern, a slope and a small square that bear the name “El Trillo”, do so in reference to the Trillo family, and in particular to Juan de Trillo Figueroa, a playwright who came from the same town. name in the province of Guadalajara, and that arrived in Granada with the Catholic Monarchs.
The descendants of Juan Trillo occupied positions of certain importance in activities as diverse as the military, culture or politics of Granada.
The Aljibe de Trillo is located at the foot of a beautiful carmen. Its construction has a single nave and is covered by two sections of vaults, vaulted and barrel. Its beautiful cover with a slightly pointed horseshoe arch stands out. Its waters, like almost all of the Albaicín, come from the Aynadamar irrigation canal . The Trillo Cistern has a capacity of just over 50 cubic meters and its waters flowed into the Azacayuela that served water to the Bañuelo de la Carrera del Darro.
The Trillo cistern is very similar to the Rodrigo del Campo cistern , in Realejo. It is believed that these two cisterns are contemporary to the 14th century.
Without a doubt, walking through the Albaycín neighborhood at sunset is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves, and even more so if we season it with a romantic evening in any of the restaurants near the Aljibe de Trillo. There, not only the good food, but also the company and the views of the Alhambra will turn our walk into an especially indelible day in our retinas."
