"Built with traditional molinaza stone, it has four semicircular arches and has one of the most spectacular views of Montoro. Ideal for you to capture the best memories of your visit with your camera or Smartphone.

This monument stands on the Guadalquivir River and connects the main center of the city with the El Retamar neighborhood. It began to be built in 1498 during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, becoming one of the most characteristic and important in the province of Córdoba.

From the stone walkway, it is worth stopping and contemplating, at your feet, the Guadalquivir Pass and, above your head, the white hamlet of Montoro.
In addition, you should know that the bridge measures 180 meters long by 9 meters wide and the keystone of the main arch is 18 meters high above the water level.

It has two access abutments and the central eye stands out for its size and for being flanked in its piers by large angular cutwaters in the front of the current, with those located in the rear front being smaller and with a curved surface.
If you ask any Montoreño about this bridge as you pass through the municipality, they may not know it or may respond with the name Puente de las Donadas or Doncellas.

And the thing is that, until relatively recently, it was believed that this Bridge was paid for with the jewels donated by women and salaries given by neighbors to build this architectural element, although the truth contained a different reality.

According to the information provided by the General Archive of Simancas of Valladolid, before the 19th century the issue of donations of jewelry was not discussed, referring to necklaces, bracelets or earrings.

In this case, it was another type of jewelery referring to earthly goods: the pastures. Thus, for the construction of the Bridge, the people of Montoro got rid of true natural jewels that the Catholic Monarchs, Juana I and Carlos V gave their permission so that they could sell them and with the money obtained they could finish the construction of the bridge.

Similarly, the municipalities adjacent to Montoro also had to contribute to the costs, since the Córdoba Council forced them to deliver monetary sums to the Montoro City Council.

"In one way or another, they were going to benefit from said infrastructure that connected the countryside with the mountains - on the way to Toledo and Madrid through Ciudad Real."
