This disaster memorial is for Northwest Airlines Flight 255 which crashed August 16, 1987 shortly after takeoff when pilots had failed to extend flaps for the required lift. Everyone on board perished with the exception of a four year old girl. Additionally two people on the ground died when the plane hit their vehicle on Middlebelt Road on the east side of the airport.

The black granite memorial has at its center a white dove holding an olive branch and a ribbon with a red heart with the number 255 in it. There is a remembrance statement and additionally a prayer. Flanking this stone are two additional stones which list the names of those who perished in the disaster. The memorial sits in an elevated field where Middlebelt Road passes under the I-94 bridge, the site of the crash. The dedication reads:

We Remember...
Our 156 loved ones who perished
August 16, 1987 at 8:46 p.m. when
Northwest Airlines Flight 255
crashed seconds after take off from
Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
