Plans for this venue had been on the drawing boards for several years, and construction was about to commence, when the announcement came that San Jose was going to receive an expansion NHL franchise. Within a very short time, what had been planned as a 10,000 seat venue with no tenants, was redesigned into a state-of-the-art facility seating 17,200 for hockey, and more than 19,000 for basketball and concerts.
