Riley L. Pitts was a United States Army officer who served during World War II and the Vietnam War. He was born on October 15, 1937 in Fallis, Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1967.
During the Vietnam War, Captain Pitts served as a company commander in the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, and 25th Infantry Division. On October 31, 1967 his unit came under heavy enemy fire during a battle in South Vietnam. Despite being wounded, Captain Pitts continued to lead his men and provide covering until he was hit again and killed.
For his bravery and heroism, Captain Pitts was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. He was the first black officer to do so.
