The 1983 film "The Outsiders" was based on the 1967 book by S. E. Hinton of the same name. The movie had a cast of future stars like Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez and Tom Waits. The Outsiders was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. A young Sofia Coppola has a small role, and today she is known for her directorial talent.
A climactic night "rumble" between the protagonists and the "Socs" was filmed here at Crutchfield Park. The pool seen in the film was constructed for the movie; the concrete pad where it was set is still here. The children's merry-go-round seen in the film is also gone, replaced by more modern play equipment. Other nearby locations for this film that are nearby include Ponyboy's house (now a museum devoted to the film) and the Circle Theater.
